The Monkey, a film adaptation of a short story written by the incredible Stephen King, has passed a remarkable milestone at the box office. Inching towards the $50 million mark, The Monkey has surpassed one of the most famous King Adaptations, The Shining.
While The Shining was initially a divisive film, hated even by King himself, it has become widely regarded as one of the best horror films of all time. The film grossed $46 million with a reported budget of $20 million. In contrast, The Monkey cost around half that price to make.
Osgood Perkins, the director of The Monkey, made his mark on the horror genre with his film Longlegs. That film ended up making $125 million at the box office, making Perkins one to watch when it came to horror. While The Monkey has not quite reached Longlegs’ level of success, it has succeeded at another task, the task of sending the cumulative box office earnings of every King adaptation towards $3 billion.
The Monkey is considered “Fresh” on the website Rotten Tomatoes, holding a score of 79%. This score is only 4 points behind The Shining which sits at 83%. Things are looking up for The Monkey and Perkins, as he scores another win in his filmmaking portfolio.
