The MCU Take On ‘Blade’ Continues To Face Off Against Production Issues

Although it’s been in production for some years, Marvel’s Blade continues to struggle to get off the ground. Blade has been confirmed since 2019.

Intended to bring the comic icon to the MCU, the upcoming Blade film would mark the second adaptation of the character, following in the steps of the 1998 Wesley Snipes-led film.

However, since its confirmation, Blade has been, and still is, facing a slew of production issues.

With star Mahershala Ali still attached, for the time being, the film has already lost and then picked up another director. Bassam Tariq, who directed Mogul Mowgli, was slated to direct the film at first, but parted ways with the project a reported two months out from the commencement of production.

The next director, Yann Demange, director of White Boy Rick, was chosen by star Ali. Hollywood Reporter noted that, due to Ali being the one to pitch Blade to Marvel, he carries a certain amount of creative control.

Hollywood Reporter also made note of Ali’s growing frustration at the film trying to get the ball rolling.

The script itself has also seen a number of rewrites across the tumultuous process. One draft in particular fell victim to the repercussions of the recent WGA strike. The draft was to be written by Nic Pizzolatto.

Some of the draft ideas differ drastically from others, as well. The most recent story reportedly has it set in modern times, but one script had it set almost a hundred years ago.

One of the most recent developments, however, comes with Demange leaving the project, leaving it once again without a director.
