‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ Begins Its Box Office Journey

Star Wars is back on the big screen with the release of The Mandalorian & Grogu. Now that the film has finally hit theaters, facing a bit of an uphill battle, the creative minds behind the latest adventure in a galaxy far, far away have started sharing details on it.

The Mandalorian & Grogu follows the renowned bounty hunter Din Djarin, known as The Mandalorian, and his young companion Grogu as they help the New Republic wipe out what little remains of the Galactic Empire. When the New Republic gets a job from two notorious Hutt gangsters, Mando is forced into the criminal underworld to extract a high profile target, in one of his most daring endeavors yet.

With Jon Favreau engineering The Mandalorian as fans know it today, his directing the film seemed a no-brainer. As a long-time Star Wars fan himself, Favreau detailed to ScreenRant his particular approach that he wanted to take to Mando & Grogu.

Favreau explained that he wanted this movie to be a “celebration” of sorts. “Anybody who’s seen the show, come on back and we’re gonna play the hits. It’s gonna be fun. For people who love Star Wars and didn’t see the show, we want them to be able to come in, and there’s a lot in there for you too- you’ll recognize a lot of things.”

Despite that approach, this film seems as though it’s facing a Hutt-sized task when it comes to resonating fully with moviegoers. Hollywood Reporter noted that there is some positive buzz around those that have seen the film, with it boasting an audience score of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes- the highest of any of Disney’s Star Wars films. The previous record holder of that title was Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which currently rests at 87%.

Audiences are reacting positively to it, but that’s only those that have seen it. When it comes to the box office itself, this outing for Star Wars is struggling to put up regular numbers for franchise standards. Deadline noted its looking at four day weekend of anywhere between $91 to $96 million- not bad numbers by any reckoning. But fans will be quick to recall Solo’s performance (per BoxOfficeMojo), which opened to $84 million, and went on to underperform at the box office, which marked an all-time low for Star Wars at that point.
