Russell Crowe’s latest project, The Last Druid, has generated significant global interest, with international buyers eager to see the actor return to a Roman-era setting. Crowe, who famously played a vengeful warrior in Gladiator, will once again pick up arms, this time as a Celtic elder defending his people against the might of the Roman Empire. The film, produced by AGC Studios, was a top seller at last week’s American Film Market (AFM).
The story follows Crowe’s character, a peaceful Druid elder, who faces a Roman emperor’s forces after they discover his secluded community in the Caledonian mountains. The elder must protect his family and fellow Druids from looming annihilation. Directed by Will Eubank (Underwater), The Last Druid is based on a script by Eubank, Phil Gawthorne and Carlyle Eubank. Filming is slated to start next year, with additional casting in progress.
Sales for The Last Druid were brisk at AFM, where AGC locked in seven-figure deals with Amazon Studios for the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Other distribution agreements include Plaion Pictures for Germany, Italy and Switzerland; Tripictures/Dea Planeta for Spain; Plus Films for Latin America; and Vertical Distribution for Poland, Romania and other Eastern European territories.
AGC CEO Stuart Ford expressed excitement about the film’s reception, saying, “This one was exceptionally well received by the international distributors who were fired up at the idea of Russell in this role and responded enthusiastically to the screenplay’s skillful marriage of action and heart.”
AGC also secured deals in the Middle East, Turkey, India and other regions, expanding The Last Druid’s reach to audiences worldwide. Ben Pugh of 42 will produce alongside Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Fred Berger of Range Media Partners, with additional executive production by Felix Farmer’s Brandon Millan, Sam Wasson and George Hsieh.
