The already highly anticipated sequel to Sydney Sweeney’s blockbuster hit The Housemaid has set a release date that puts it in competition with the two biggest franchise hits at the box office. An announcement was made today by Lionsgate that The Housemaid’s Secret is set to be released in theaters on December 17th, 2027, the same day that Avengers: Secret Wars and The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will be hitting theaters.
The sequel will be an adaptation of the second book in Freida McFadden’s The Housemaid series and will see Sweeney share the screen with Kirsten Dunst, who will be playing a reclusive owner of a house Mille (Sweeney) is “never allowed to see.” As Millie gradually discovers the houses’ dark secrets, she comes to realize that they rival her own. Michele Morrone, who plays the Italian groundskeeper Enzo, is set to reprise his role. Paul Feig is set to direct the sequel, with a script penned by original writer of The Housemaid, Rebecca Sonnenshine. Hidden Pictures’ Todd Liberman and Pretty Dangerous Pictures’ Laura Fischer are attached as producers. Sweeney will also serve as a producer for Fifty-Fifty Films, as well as Feig for Pretty Dangerous. Carly Elter and Alex Young will serve as executive producers under the Hidden Pictures banner.
The Housemaid was considered a box-office hit, grossing approximately $397 million against a $35 million budget. It should be pretty obvious that Lionsgate was thrilled to green light the sequel adaptation. Time will only tell if this highly anticipated sequel can hold its own at the box office against some of the biggest franchises in the world. Stay tuned into MXDWN for any future updates on the project.
