The official trailer for the musical film The High Note has just been released. The film is directed by Nisha Ganatra, whose is known for her work in the Mindy Kaling-starring comedy picture Late Night. The High Note will be another workplace dramedy that centers around a bond between powerful female leads, taking place in the entertainment industry.
Dakota Johnson stars as the frustrated, overworked personal assistant to middle-aged musical pop diva who will be played by Black-ish‘s Tracee Ellis Ross. Together, they form an unlikely alliance through their complicated workplace.
As the daughter of singing legend Diana Ross, Tracee Ellis Ross seems fitting for the superstar role in the film. Kelvin Harrison Jr., Ice Cube, Zoe Chao, Eddie Izzard, Bill Pullman and Diplo will also star in the film.
The synopsis is revealed in the trailer through montages of what goes on both backstage and onstage. The superstar character Grace Davis (Ross) is not only talented, but also has a huge ego. Her personal assistant Maggie (Johnson) aspires to be a music producer, but she is stuck running errands and getting ignored by Davis’ team. When Grace’s manager, played by Ice Cube, suggests the superstar to do a residency in Las Vegas, she instead reveals she wants to record her first album in a decade. Maggie hops on to the project by asking to produce the album, and together, the duo develops a plan that could change both of their careers drastically.
