The new annual Award ceremony, the Academy Museum Gala, is set to honor the revolutionary Quentin Tarantino, Rita Moreno, and prominent emerging star Paul Mescal. According to Variety, these three will have until Oct. 19, 2024, to prepare for their speeches.
Quentin Tarantino will be awarded the Luminary Award, which is awarded to an artist who’s responsible for expanding the ever-knowledge of narrative within cinema. Who can forget that his contributions began a trend of gangsters discussing their curiosities, like cheeseburgers and predetermined fate?
Rita Moreno, a true icon of the silver screen, will receive the Icon Award. This esteemed recognition is given to an experienced artist whose career transcends the boundaries of the silver screen. Rita’s illustrious movie career, which began in the Golden Age of Hollywood, has spanned an impressive 70 years, appearing in Singin’ in the Rain and the original and adaptation of West Side Story.
Paul Mescal, a rising star in the world of cinema, will be presented with the Vantage Award. This special recognition honors potential excellence in cinema by challenging dominant narratives. Mescal has made his mark in films such as Aftersun, All of Us Strangers, and the hit TV show, Normal People.
As the years pass, the list of honorees expands in excellence. In 2023, The Academy Museum honored Michael B. Jorden, Sofia Coppola, and Oprah Winfrey.
The Academy Museum Gala is part of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, which uses the event’s proceeds to fund youth educational programs, museum exhibitions, and public services in Los Angeles.
