The first look for the new movie Hurry Up Tomorrow has been revealed per Entertainment Weekly. The Weeknd, or Abel Tesfaye, who stars in the upcoming title as well as being a producer, released his sixth album on January 31st that shares the same name as the film. The rest of the cast includes Jenna Ortega, Barry Keoghan, Roy Williams Jr., Davide Moskowitza, and Paul L. Davis. Hurry Up Tomorrow is directed by Trey Edward Shults, who has films like 2017’s It Comes At Night and 2019’s Waves under his belt.
The first look includes several still images that reveal a little bit of the world of this film as well as a behind-the-scenes interview with some of the cast on the upcoming project. One still pictures Keoghan and Tesfaye standing in front of a mirror with Keoghan whispering in Tesfaye’s ear. While the other two stills include Ortega, with one of her in red lighting looking out of a window, and the second one has Ortega standing over Tesfaye with her hand on his face while he screams at her.
The official synopsis of the film has also been revealed, described as “a musician plagued by insomnia who gets pulled into an odyssey with a stranger (Ortega) who begins to unravel the very core of his existence.” Shults stated that he felt like he had “never seen a movie quite like it,” while Tesfaye expressed that his experience making the film “was really introspective and cathartic for me.” Along with speaking about the film, Tesfaye and Shults gave us an insight into their own professional relationship. With Shults saying, “We hit it off like crazy. He was not what I expected…. He emboldened me. He was like, ‘If we do something, I want you to make it a Trey movie, not just something about the album.” Tesfaye responded by describing Shults’ directorial vision as “boundless,” along with stating that “his films are always emotionally captivating, unlike anyone else.”
Shults goes on to praise Ortega as well, calling her “one of the most talented people” that he has ever worked with and “phenomenal” in her role. Ortega gave a comment on her experience shooting the film, revealing that she did not think she was right for the part at first, but “through conversation and built trust with Trey and Abel, it felt like a team and vision I wanted to work with.”
The film, which is set to be released in theaters on May 16th, is produced by Tesfaye’s production company Manic Phase, while Ortega and Shults are named as executive producers.
