The Fate of the Furious roared into theaters and soared to the number one spot in the box office, grossing a record breaking $532 million in worldwide ticket sales. It is confirmed to be the highest grossing-opening of all time surpassing Star Wars: The Force Awakens which grossed $528 million worldwide in December 2015.
The Fate of the Furious, the eighth installment in Universal’s high-octane signature franchise, also boasts the highest grossing-opening for an African-American film director – F. Gary Gray continues to hold well, following his success two years ago with the summer blockbuster Straight Outta Compton. The film earned $98.8 million at the North American box office, combined with a staggering 433.2 million in other territories around the world – $31 million was collected just from IMAX theaters as well, making it the biggest April debut and fourth highest-grossing opening for IMAX.
The Fast and Furious franchise continues to surprise and bring in the big bucks with an untitled sequel being announced to be released on April 19th, 2019. Vin Diesel, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Tyrese Gibson, Jason Statham and Kurt Russell star. Oscar winners Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren, as well as Scott Eastwood joined the franchise this go around.
