2020 saw an array of events that left many in a negative mood, to put it lightly. But amidst all the tragedy of that year, there were some simple acts that captivated countless people and gave them something new and exciting to cling onto.
One of these was the journey of 16 Asian elephants who left their habitats and traversed the wilderness, being followed and recorded by drones, sending a live feed of the journey out to the world. And now, from Beach House Pictures, China Review Studio, and Imax, comes documentary feature about the elephants: The Elephant Odyssey.
The documentary is currently being filmed in China, and is on track for a 2024 release to the Imax network. It’s being directed by Alice Gu and has Clair Popkin of Free Solo as director of photography, Deadline reports.
Head of Documentaries for Imax, John Turner, has commented on the upcoming feature: “The 18-month journey of the Yunnan elephants at the height of the pandemic was a hopeful antidote to the lockdowns many of us were enduring,” he said. “We wanted to know more about these animals and why it happened. Together with Beach House Pictures, China Review Studio and director Alice Gu, this will be an immersive wildlife documentary like no other.”
The elephants in question crossed 1,000 kilometers over the course of their 18-month trek. The Elephant Odyssey clocks in at 90 minutes, and will release to Imax theaters in 2024.
