After gaining much popularity after both of its theater and streaming releases, The Housemaid achieved high viewing numbers in ticket sales & streams that immediately initiated the spark for a sequel out of sheer anticipation for what happens next to Millie, which has now lead to exciting news of another film adaptation to accompany the quickly growing Freida McFadden story collection.

The Housemaid focused on a story of two women dealing with extraneous circumstances and them finding an escape from it all together. This next installment alludes to a separate story that follows the theme of peeling back the curtain to American domestic life with a tale about a cliché divorcée that was blindsided by the ending of her marriage and her ex-husband’s sudden personal new beginning that left her life as she knew it shattered in pieces. Another story of a romance gone awry in the blink of an eye, and the female protagonist’s journey as she fearfully embarks on a path towards rebuilding her life alone after an abrupt mandatory reconstruction – but it wouldn’t be a Freida McFadden story if the plot weren’t shrouded in riddles, revenge and retribution.
The Divorce is one of two releases from the author this year. Though StudioCanal won the bid, the film is still in the earliest stages of production but the project’s author had the following to say about the exciting news:
“I’m delighted to be working with the teams at Studiocanal and Working Title to bring ‘The Divorce’ to the big screen,” McFadden said in a statement announcing the deal. “From the start, they have come forward with an unparalleled enthusiasm and a strong vision for how to get this project off the ground. I can’t wait to see what unfolds!”
McFadden recently revealed exclusively to USA Today that she had written her works in pseudonym for an attempt at anonymity while she was still a full-time medical practitioner, but felt the urge to come clean last month because she is tired of people debating her identity. The author’s true name is Sara Cohen, who used to practice as a doctor in Neuroscience and her co-workers eventually figured out that she was the acclaimed author of the twisted thrillers highlighting justice for scorned wives that were steadily growing in popularity (though some kindly agreed to maintain the secret).
“I’m at a point in my career when I’m tired of this being a secret. I’m tired of people debating if I’m a real person or if I’m three men,” McFadden says. “I am a real person and I have a real identity and I don’t have anything to hide.”
There is no telling how much bloodshed is in store for this franchise (though the upcoming book cover suggests plenty) but StudioCanal is likely aiming for more heavy grossing numbers with this addition. Hard copies of The Divorce will be ready for sale on bookshelves by May 26, 2026 while The Housemaid’s Secret film sequel is still in production but scheduled to be released on December 17, 2027.
