Working Title’s upcoming film, The Danish Girl, is set for release on November 27 of this year. The film is already garnering a lot of Oscar buzz, with star Eddie Redmayne’s (The Theory of Everything) own awards, as well as the production company’s plethora of accolades for its long list of films – from Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy to Pride and Prejudice.
The Danish Girl follows Redmayne’s character, first known to the world as Einar Wegener through the transformation to the transgender woman and artist known to the world as Lili Elbe, upending the marriage she had had with Gerda Wegener, played by Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina). Lili Elbe underwent experimental sex reassignment surgeries in Berlin in the 1930s and is known as a pioneer in the transgender movement, though she later died after the transplanted uterus she received was rejected following the surgery. The above picture from Radio Times features Redmayne’s transformation into Lili Elbe, as well as a picture of the real woman, and a piece of her art.
The film is being produced through Working Title Films along with Focus Features. The screenplay is based off of the 2001 book by David Ebershoff
