The Conjuring: Last Rites has set box office records in just its opening weekend. The film, which is being marketed as the final film in the Conjuring universe, has already made $83 million domestically, making it the highest opening for any film in the Conjuring franchise. This makes it one of the best openings for any horror movie ever. Additionally, the film grossed $107 million overseas, making it the highest-grossing debut for a horror film internationally. It dethroned It: Chapter 2, which made $92 million.
Whether or not The Conjuring: Last Rites maintains its momentum in the coming weeks is still to be seen. While the opening is impressive and exceeded expectations, it still has a ways to go in order to match and surpass the other films in the series. Last Rites currently sports a 56% on Rotten Tomatoes with a 79% audience score. Middling reviews did not seem to affect its opening weekend, but horror movies often are quite frontloaded. Poor reviews are more likely to turn people away after the opening weekend. Sharing the lowest score of the series with 2021’s The Devil Made Me Do It, it is possible many will see this outing as a disappointing sendoff for the franchise.
Regardless, this impressive start will at least earn Last Rites a place among the horror box office winners this year, joining films such as Sinners, Final Destination: Bloodlines and Weapons as surprise hits. As the distributor for all four of those films, Warner Bros. seems to be dominating the horror space in 2025. The Conjuring: Last Rites is still playing in theaters everywhere.
