A previous report suggested that Matt Reeves had already finished it, but James Gunn recently clarified that this wasn’t the case. Responding to a fan on Threads, Gunn said, “I think that report was well-intentioned but it was mistaken. We are very much looking forward to it.” So, while the script is still in progress, it’s not cause for concern.
This doesn’t necessarily mean there’s any major issue with the screenplay. Reeves could still be refining the draft, and several factors could influence the timeline. For example, Colin Farrell recently revealed details about the Penguin’s role in the sequel, suggesting that Reeves has progressed far enough to discuss key aspects of the plot with the cast. As long as everything stays on track, filming should begin in early 2025, with the planned release date of October 2, 2026, still set.
It’s a positive sign that Reeves is taking his time with the script. After the way the first film ended, The Batman – Part II has a lot to build on, and fans are expecting the story to take the next step in Robert Pattinson’s journey as the Dark Knight. The fact that the production is moving forward and the cast is already being informed about their roles means things are progressing, even if the script isn’t finished just yet.
The sequel will continue the story from the 2022 film, set in the same universe as the Penguin series, and will feature characters like the Riddler and a new version of the Joker.
The Batman – Part II is expected to hit theaters on October 2, 2026.
