While it does cover a lot of the same ground as a previous trailer, the newest preview for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 at least makes a point to assure fans that one of the title character’s key traits will not be absent in the film: humor.
After the first film in the rebooted Spider-Man film series and the first trailer for the sequel, viewers may be forgiven for assuming they were in for a Spider-Man equivalent of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight series. One of the Spider-Man character’s most appealing qualities (to comic books readers as well as film and television viewers) is his ability to laugh in the face of danger, heartbreak, and tragedy. Though the first Amazing Spider-Man did contain a few quips and jokes from the web-slinging hero, most of the films time was dedicated to showing the remorse he feels over the murder of his uncle. This new trailer is perhaps an indication that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be a little more balanced in terms of humor and drama.
Then again, maybe the humorous scenes in the trailer are the only humorous scenes in the movie. Maybe Spider-Man is going the Batman route – The Amazing Spider-Man 2 even has the same number of villains as The Dark Knight: Electro, Rhino, and Goblin in the former; Joker, Scarecrow, and Two-Face in the latter. We’ll see May 2nd.
