The Academy of Cinema Arts and Techniques, based out of France, has ended their account on X. Upon the deletion of their account, they were open about the reasons and rationale that went into the decision.
Formerly known as Twitter, the social media platform was acquired by Elon Musk in late 2022. Since then, he rebranded the app to X and made changes to the way the app is run. Many have voiced their distaste with these new implementations, including other organizations within the film industry.
The Hollywood Reporter notes that late last year, Alberto Barbera, head of the Venice Film Festival, departed the app, alluding to Musk’s choices as the reason. He stated in his decision that the “objectives and purposes” of the app stopped lining up with his own and that he “lost the desire” to continue his profile.
The Hollywood Reporter also noted that the Berlin Film Festival is also no longer associated with X, but there is no clear connection to Musk’s choices.
In a statement about the departure, the Academy of Cinema Arts and Techniques stated similar reasons as the Venice Film Festival. They no longer share the same values as the app.
The Academy continued by saying that it uplifts “all forms of artistic expression, without distinction of origin or identity of those who contribute to the creation or distribution of films.”
