My first reaction upon reading (over on The Hollywood Reporter) that Tessa Thompson is joining Chris Hemsworth in a new take on Men in Black was utter confusion. There’s a new Men in Black movie that isn’t a crossover with 21 Jump Street? Chris Hemsworth is involved? Is this a spinoff, or a reboot, or some other combination of the two that has yet to be attempted (a spin-boot)? Tessa Thompson is a man? My brain hurts.
Yet here we are, and Thompson is indeed joining Hemsworth on another intergalactic adventure. They first teamed up in Thor: Ragnarok, with Hemsworth playing the titular Thor, and Thompson playing the kickass Valkyrie. Assuming Hemsworth actually signs on (sources say he is close), the two talented actors will have another chance to put a spotlight on their sparkling onscreen chemistry. They will need all the chemistry they can get to replace the classic duo of Agent K and Agent J, played by Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith, in the first three Men in Black films.
The untitled film, which may or may not be called 2 Men 2 Black, is to be directed by F. Gary Gray (Fate of the Furious), and written by Matt Holloway and Art Marcum (Iron Man). Details of the reboot’s plot (working title: Men of the Blackness) are being kept under wraps, but sources claim that the film will feature an ensemble cast rather than just focusing on the two leads, and it will have set-pieces all over the galaxy.
Thompson recently appeared in Alex Garland’s mind-bending Annihilation, and she’s currently filming scenes for Creed II, starring Michael B. Jordan. This summer she stars in the film Sorry to Bother You, and she returns in HBO’s Westworld (now in its second season) on April 22nd.
Sony currently plans to release Men in Black: Tokyo Drift on June 14, 2019.
