As Ex Machina sits toward the top of many end-of-year lists, director Alex Garland’s next film, Annihilation, is also taking shape. According to The Wrap, Tessa Thompson (Creed) is in talks to join Natalie Portman (Jane Got a Gun), Gina Rodriguez (Deepwater Horizon), and Frances McDormand (Hail Caesar!) in the new science fiction thriller.
The film follows a biologist (Portman) who leads an expedition to Area X where civilization has failed to thrive for unknown reasons. Thompson’s role hasn’t been confirmed yet but it’s safe to assume she will play one of the members of the expedition. The film is based on a book that is the first of Jeff Vandermeer’s Southern Reach Trilogy.
This marks Thompson’s first casting since Creed opened and was a hit at the box office. She previously starred in Selma and Dear White People and is currently starring in the in the HBO television series Westworld. She will also be seen next in the indie drama Salt Water and the comedy War on Everyone.
Thompson is the fourth actress cast in the film. Garland previously explored feminist issues in Ex Machina and it will be interesting to see if the director explores these themes in Annihilation, as it will star four women exclusively.
We’ll have more on the film as it releases.
