Terry Rossio, the writer behind much of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, is set to return to Central America with his newest film, currently titled Yucatan. Robert Downey Jr. is set to produce and potentially star in this film about a treasure hunt traveling across the Yucatan Peninsula, as first reported by Deadline.
This film will be developed through Team Downey, the production company the actor runs with his wife, Susan Downey. They have a goal of making strong, character-driven films, which was most recently seen in The Judge. Deadline first reported this story, which began with a 1700-page treatment that the late Steve McQueen originally wrote for himself. Rossio and Downey are set to overhaul and update the film for a modern audience, reportedly updating it into a “mind-bending adventure story.” The movie will revolve around a salvage expert blazing through the Yucatan Peninsula in search of a lost Mayan treasure.
Robert Downey Jr. has a busy movie schedule over the next few years. Along with his highly popular role as Tony Stark for Marvel Studios’ multiple superhero films, he and his team are in the process of developing other stories, including a new adaptation of Pinocchio, as well as a third installment of the popular Sherlock Holmes series.
