The photo above was recently released from the Bucharest, Romania set of Terry Gilliam’s (12 Monkeys, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) new film The Zero Theorem. In case you can’t quite make it out, that is a bald Christoph Waltz in his role as Qohen Leth, the film’s protagonist. Leth is a computer hacker living in a dystopian future who sets out to find the meaning of human life. There are some, however, who would prefer to see his quest fail.
After his award winning performance in the antebellum western Django Unchained, Waltz has kept busy by performing as the voice of the villain in the animated film Epic. After filming wraps up on The Zero Theorem he is set to play Mikhail Gorbachev in the film Reykjavik.
The story for The Zero Theorem was written by college professor Pat Rushin and was partly inspired by Gilliam’s 1985 film Brazil, a dark comedy about a dystopian future in which a government employee dreams of escaping his monotonous life and pursuing the woman of his dreams. In the process, he is labeled an enemy of the state by the governing beauracracy. The film blends elements of comedy, fantasy, and satire with a bleak view of the future. Like Brazil and much of his other earlier work, technology plays a large role in The Zero Theorem, though Gilliam has described the film as being “not quite” science fiction.
The film will also feature Tilda Sinton, and Matt Damon will appear in a smaller role.
The Zero Theorem is set to release in December 2013.
