Damien Leone’s Terrifier 3 has opened to a blend of critical praise and controversy, continuing the cult horror franchise centered on Art the Clown. Following the success of Terrifier 2, which grossed $15.7 million on a modest budget of $250,000, Terrifier 3 premiered with a significantly larger $2 million budget and stepped-up production quality, including a professional makeup effects team.

The film debuted on September 19 at Fantastic Fest and has sparked strong reactions. During its U.K. screening, some attendees reportedly walked out due to the graphic content, while France restricted viewership to those over 18. Such responses echo those to the previous film, known for its explicit practical effects and unsettling scenes.

Leone, who began his career as a special effects artist, discussed the challenges of working with a bigger budget and increased expectations. 

“In some regards, it was easier, but [Terrifier 3] was also the most stressful and intense film I’ve ever worked on. More money, more problems is real,” Leone said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

He explained that the earlier films were made at his own pace, without the pressure of strict deadlines, allowing for a more relaxed production process. 

“The two other films were very homemade. We didn’t have anybody breathing down our neck, saying, ‘The movie needs to come out by this date.’”

Looking ahead, Leone hinted at a potential fourth installment, though he remains cautious about setting any timeline. The ending of Terrifier 3 leaves room for continuation. 

“I have a lot of [Terrifier 4] blueprinted now, and depending on how Terrifier 3 does, and if it continues to get a good reception, then that could be something I dive into right away,” Leone said.

Terrifier 3 runs just over two hours, a compromise between the longer runtime of Terrifier 2 and the more traditional slasher length of about 90 minutes.

 “There were some really great character moments that I had to cut out… but maybe one day there’ll be an extended version,” he said.

The plot of Terrifier 3 picks up five years after Terrifier 2, with Sienna Shaw (Lauren LaVera) facing Art the Clown once again. 

Leone describes Sienna as the “heart and soul” of the series. The film opens in theaters on October 11, and fans are waiting to see if the cliffhanger ending will lead to another chilling chapter in the saga.
