American writer-director Jane Schoenbrun, known for I Saw The TV Glow, has announced final wrap on her next verbosely titled project, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. The cast includes Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson. The latter’s presence possibly continues Schoenbrun’s thematic interest in casting stars of iconic 1990s science fiction and television series. The cast of I Saw The TV Glow featured Michael C. Maronna and Danny Tamberelli, of The Adventures Of Pete & Pete, and Amber Benson, of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Both shows were cited as an influence on I Saw The TV Glow by Schoenbrun, along with others such as Twin Peaks.

Like that film, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is likely to use textual references to iconic projects of its genre and subject matter. In this case, slashers like Friday the 13th and Sleepaway Camp tell a meta-narrative about the genre. Some of the design elements the filmmaker has shared have visual signifiers common with those franchises. Schoenbrun is a trans and queer filmmaker, and the 1983 film Sleepaway Camp has been infamous for its usage of trans identity as a story element and plot twist, though there have been several contemporary reviews and reevaluations by critics and horror films alike on that film’s atmosphere and tone in relation to it.

Plan B Entertainment and Mubi are the production companies behind the film. The latter is set to be the main distributor of the film in multiple territories. Mubi recently had major success distributing an auteur film director-driven horror project with The Substance by Coralie Fargeat. I Saw The TV Glow was greeted with critical acclaim, so there is excitement for fans of horror, auteur filmmakers, and many more overlapping spheres of film culture.
