Yesterday was the biggest night in Hollywood as stars from around the industry gathered for the 90th Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. With so many eyes on the television, world premiere sneak-peeks and teaser trailers are bound to happen. Taking advantage of this opportunity, Disney decided to debut their teaser for the upcoming Mary Poppins Returns, starring Emily Blunt as the infamous supernanny.
In this next chapter from the original film in 1964, Jane and Michael Banks are now grown, and Michael has three kids of his own. After a personal loss in the family, Mary shows up out of the blue to help the family rediscover the joy in their life. In the trailer, Michael (Ben Whishaw) is seen standing with Jane (Emily Mortimer) before saying: “Mary Poppins! It is wonderful to see you.” The enigmatic nanny is then shown responding, “Yes, it is, isn’t it.”
Lin-Manuel Miranda is also seen in the trailer, but it isn’t clear what his role is yet given the footage released yesterday. However, in an interview with Variety in 2016 he gave some context as to what his part will be: “I play a lamplighter, Jack, who grew up sort of apprenticing to Bert (Dick Van Dyke). So I know if Mary Poppins shows up, it’s gonna get awesome. I perform that function in the movie, of saying: ‘Y’all don’t know about Mary Poppins. When Mary’s around, cool sh– happens.’” He also shared that this new installment is “straight up a sequel” to the original and not a remake of any sorts.
Mary Poppins is set to Return to our theaters this Christmas. Watch the new trailer below.
