Director Quentin Tarantino has collaborated with producer Harvey Weinstein on every one of his films – but given the sexual assault allegations levied against the former Weinstein Co. executive and Tarantino’s response, the auteur is currently searching for a new home for his untitled ninth feature film.
According to Deadline, Tarantino has completed the screenplay, which is rumored to be based on (or at least inspired by) the Manson Family murders of the ’60s. News of the script broke during the summer, with additional rumors circulating that Margot Robbie (Suicide Squad) was in talks to play the role of Sharon Tate, who was murdered by the Manson Family. Deadline also reports that Tarantino has been in talks with previous collaborators Leonardo DiCaprio (Django Unchained), Brad Pitt (Inglourious Basterds), and Samuel L. Jackson (almost all of Tarantino’s films).
Tarantino is no stranger to writing characters with an almost zealous appetite for violence, so he seems like a logical choice to unravel the complex amorality of Charles Manson and his Family. However, the fate of the film is still up in the air as the budget is expected to be around $100 million. Given Tarantino’s track record of turning cult films into box office hits (Django Unchained made a remarkable $425 million worldwide), he will likely become the subject of an intense studio bidding war.
