Actress Talia Ryder has joined the cast of the Fred Astaire biopic starring Tom Holland as Fred Astaire. Known for her roles in the Sundance indie Never Rarely Sometimes Always, the Steven Spielberg-directed remake of West Side Story, and Ethan Coen’s Honey, Don’t, she is said to play dancer and MGM actress June Allyson. Ryder is no stranger to musical roles; in addition to her role in Spielberg’s West Side Story, her career began with a role on Broadway in Matilda the Musical.
Talia Ryder joins a cast that already includes Margaret Qualley as Fred Astaire’s older sister, Adele Astaire, and Sabrina Carpenter as Ginger Rogers. Paddington, Paddington 2, and Wonka director Paul King is directing the film, and he co-wrote the script with Steven Levenson. The script is adapted from Kathleen Riley’s book The Astaires: Fred & Adele.
The film will follow the life of iconic dancer and Golden Age Hollywood actor Fred Astaire. The film has active support from many of Fred Astaire’s family members, including his wife, Ava Astaire McKenzie, and her son, Tyler McKenzie. Tyler McKenzie is also serving as a consultant and producer on the film.
Amy Pascal and Rachel O’Connor are producing the film through Pascal Pictures, while Ben Holden and Josh Hyams produce through Lightbulb Pictures, and Tom Holland produces through Billy17.
Sony Pictures is releasing the film. A production or release date isn’t currently known.
