Saturday DC launched its all-virtual, first annual DC FANDOME, complete with interviews, Q and A’s, teasers, and more about all going on with the DC world, from comics to TV series, to the cinematic DC Extended Universe. One of the features saw Black Adam star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson host a Q and A with fans regarding the new movie. This comes on the heels of the first official Black Adam teaser being released on Friday, offering a look into what fans can expect from Johnson’s ancient antihero.
To start, Johnson premiered an animated video talking about the film’s intended backstory for Black Adam, which starts in an ancient city five thousand years ago in need of a hero. Black Adam shows up to save them, only to become imprisoned and eventually freed far into the future. Johnson said that the movie has been “a project in development for a very long time… over ten years” and will “go beyond wildest expectations.”
Johnson also gave insight into Black Adam’s powers and characterization, noting how he is “one of the most powerful superiors, antiheroes, villains, whatever you want to call him, in the universe.” He noted that the film will “stay true to him being a ruthless keeper of justice” and the “judge, jury, and executioner,” that will “do everything to protect his people and his family.”
Co-star Noah Centineo (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before) also made a surprise feature via computer. In a Zoom-like interview between the two, Centineo and Johnson offered a good look at Centineo’s character Atom Smasher, and the introduction to the Justice Society of America in the film. Centieno said that Atom Smasher “feels like he has something to prove” while detailing the demanding physical workouts he has been doing while in quarantine to achieve the “jacked” look of Atom Smasher.
Towards the end of the program, in response to a question about how Black Adam’s introduction will affect the DC Extended Universe, Johnson remarked that the “hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is about to change.”
Black Adam will be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown) and is slated to be released in 2021.
