Brad Pitt stars in the first trailer for the upcoming science fiction film Ad Astra. The film centers on astronaut Roy McBride’s (Pitt) mission to discover what happens to his father after he left to work on a project that was launched into space with the objective of discovering extraterrestrial life. Their mission also involved a deadly component that may affect earth’s future, with McBride’s father’s ship allegedly disappearing 16 years into its expedition. The trailer juxtaposes fast cuts of suited astronauts roving the moon while defending themselves from laser beams alongside quieter, more dramatic moments, such as McBride saying goodbye to his wife before embarking on this quest.
Ad Astra is directed by James Gray, who also directed the biographical film The Lost City of Z starring Tom Holland and Charlie Hunnam. Gray wrote the script for Ad Astra alongside Ethan Gross.
One of Gray’s initial goals for the film was to make it as accurate as possible in terms of portraying space travel. This is one of the main critiques sci-fi movies first reecieve when scrutinized by the public. In addition to Pitt, Ad Astra‘s cast also includes Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga, Liv Tyler, Donald Sutherland, Jamie Kennedy, John Finn, Kimberly Elise, Bobby Nish, Lisa Hamilton, and John Ortiz.
