Taika Waititi, director of 2019’s sensational Jojo Rabbit, has provided an update in an interview with the BBC surrounding the new Star Wars feature that he is set to write alongside 1917 writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns, which he is also supposed to direct. When asked about the film’s progress, Waititi offered mere “We’re just writing. We’re writing,” per CinemaBlend. While this isn’t much, it shows that the wheels are officially off the ground on one of the many new Star Wars projects set to follow the latest “Skywalker” trilogy, which ended in 2019 with The Rise of Skywalker.
Waititi is no stranger to the Star Wars universe, as he recently garnered an Emmy nomination for voicing the droid IG-11 in Disney+’s 2020 series, The Mandalorian. It was announced then in May that he and Wilson-Cairns would primarily helm one of the new films.
Along with Waititi, the franchise has also announced plans in the last years for a Rian Johnson-penned trilogy, Kevin Feige film, and others. There have also been recent rumors of Donald-Glover led Lando Calrissan Disney+ series, though the Waititi development is the latest news on any of them. It will be interesting to see where everything will be released given theses unprecedented pandemic times and the huge success Star Wars and its spin-offs have been on Disney+.
