In the first trailer for Americana, Sydney Sweeney plays an aspiring country singer attempting a risky scheme to make some cash. The crime film written and directed by Tony Tost arrives in theaters Aug. 22 from Lionsgate after premiering at SXSW in 2023.
Halsey, Paul Walter Hauser, Eric Dane, Simon Rex, and Zahn McClarnon join Sweeney in the cast. The film follows the ensemble as their paths intersect while trying to track down “ghost shirt,” a rare Native American artifact.
Sweeney tells Hauser, “I got a really bad idea I’d like to run by you.” She continues, “I think something bad is going down.”
As the trailer continues with violence, Halsey says, “Right now, I’m in the middle of a goddamn murder spree.”
Americana marks Tost’s first feature film, as he’s best known for his role as a show-runner on the Natasha Lyonne-starred series, Poker Face. This is also Tost’s directorial debut from a script he wrote.
Sweeney can be seen next in the Apple TV+ film Echo Valley alongside Julianne Moore and in another Lionsgate thriller, The Housemaid, alongside Amanda Seyfried.
A review from The Hollywood Reporter said, “Tost incorporates the wide-open spaces, cultural conflicts and endemic lawlessness typical to Westerns, while inverting conventional expectations by foregrounding Native American perspectives on some of the film’s thornier social issues.”
