Sydney Sweeney Movie Sets Catastrophic All-Time Box Office Record

Christy broke a devastating record at the domestic box office during its sophomore outing weekend. The sports biopic follows Sydney Sweeney as Christy Martin and her life and career as a boxer.

The film debuted with a 3-day domestic gross of $1.3 million, marking Sweeney’s third 2025 movie in a row to open below $2 million. Christy has earned mixed reviews, as it currently has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 67%.

The film brought in a 3-day total of only $108,487 at the domestic box office during its sophomore weekend. This marks a 91.7% drop, also marking it as the biggest week 2 drop of all time, as measured by Box Office Mojo. It beat the record previously set by the 2017 action thriller starring Nicolas Hoult, Collide, which dropped 88.5% in its second weekend.

Part of the drop can be attributed to the fact that Christy played in only 817 theaters in its second week, compared to its 2,184 theaters in its debut weekend. However, the film’s per-screen average also dropped from $600 to $132, demonstrating that the number of people buying tickets is considerably lower.

In both weeks, Christy has had some tough box office competition, with Now You See Me: Now You Don’t and The Running Man debuting. But neither film debuted higher than $25 million, showing that the numbers are low overall.

Sweeney films, in particular, have had a trend of underperformance. Her $55 million survival thriller, Eden, dropped 86.6% in its sophomore weekend, landing it in the bottom 10 of week 2 drops of all time.

This could be attributed to her controversial ad with American Eagle, recalling her “great jeans.” The ad was largely accused of using pro-eugenics language regarding jeans and genes.

Christy reportedly cost about $15 million to make, placing the estimated break-even point at $30 to $37.5 million. While it is unlikely to reach that milestone in theaters, Sweeney has had some awards buzz for her performance, so that could make up for the lack of progress in theaters.

Sweeney’s final box office test will be for the upcoming release of The Housemaid. The film, adapted from the bestselling Freida McFadden novel, stars Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Skelnar may have some positive news regarding Sweeney when it debuts.

Box Office Theory projects that The Housemaid will debut with more than $15 million opposite Avatar: Fire and Ash.
