Americana, a neo-western starring Sydney Sweeney, has underperformed in its box office debut. In its opening weekend, the film grossed approximately $500K, according to box office data reported by The Hollywood Reporter. The film also stars Paul Walter Hauser, Halsey, and Simon Rex.
The film is set in present-day South Dakota. It follows Sweeney’s character, Penny Jo, who, with the help of a veteran played by Walter Hauser, goes on a hunt to track down a mystical Native American artifact that is said to give whoever uses it immense wealth and power. Despite the low box office debut, the film has garnered relatively positive reviews. In its premiere at SXSW in 2023, the film debuted on review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes with an overwhelmingly positive 100%. Since its release, it has dipped to a more mixed but still decently positive 68%.
Americana is the feature film directorial and screenwriting debut of Tony Tost. It is described, in a review by Collider, as “inspired by Quentin Tarantino, especially with its episodic structure and the occasional non-chronological storytelling. But it also harkens to the Coen brothers’ interest in how money can lead normal citizens down paths they would’ve otherwise never gone down.”
Americana is currently playing in theaters.
