Lionsgate has released the first trailer for The Housemaid, a thriller starring Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Skelnar. The film follows Millie (Sydney Sweeney) as she accepts a new live-in position as a housemaid for a wealthy couple, played by Seyfried and Skelnar. But as time goes on, it becomes clear that Millie has thrown a wrench into their relationship, and she slowly uncovers the secrets that each of them carry.
In the trailer, we see Millie interview for the housemaid position, and she ends up living in their attic once she gets the job. Andrew Winchester (Skelnar) seems to be surprised that Millie will be living with them, implying that there may be some miscommunication involved in their relationship. Later on, Nina (Seyfried) tells her, “I want you to feel safe here,” and gives her a key to lock her bedroom door. The trailer then finishes up by showing a series of creepy shots including characters holding knives and lighting fires.
The film is based on the best-selling novel of the same name written by Freida McFadden, which was released in 2022. it became very popular on social media, especially because of its many twists and turns. The film adaptation is directed by Paul Feig, who is best known for directing films such as Bridesmaids and A Simple Favor. This will be the second Paul Feig film released this year, with Another Simple Favor releasing on Amazon Prime Video back in March. Sydney Sweeney has also had a busy year, with Echo Valley, Eden, and Americana releasing in the past few months. Additionally, she will star in the boxing biopic Christy releasing later this year which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The Housemaid releases on December 19 in theaters. It will be a busy weekend, with both Avatar: Fire and Ash and The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants. It will be interesting to see if The Housemaid can stand out alongside a juggernaut like Avatar.
