After a disappointing box office year for Sydney Sweeney, with films like the Neo-western Americana, the survival thriller Eden, and the Christy Martin Biopic Christy all majorly underperforming at the box office, the actress finally has a box office success this year with the debut of The Housemaid. The psychological thriller, also starring Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar and directed by Paul Feig, has already earned $18 million domestically as of Sunday, which is not far off from Lionsgate’s estimated debut of $20-21 million.
The film landed at number 3 in the domestic box office, behind the Christian animated film David, which earned $25 million domestically, and the third entry in the Avatar franchise, Avatar: Fire and Ash, which earned around $85-90 million domestically.
For comparison, The Housemaid‘s domestic gross is almost 4 times the collective gross of all of Sydney Sweeney’s other 2025 releases. This includes Americana’s measly $500,000 domestic gross, Eden’s $2.5 million, and Christy’s $2 million. Also, given The Housemaid’s reported $35 million budget, the debut is relatively close to recouping its budget and breaking even.
In addition to this surprise box office success, the film is one of Sydney Sweeney’s most critically successful films in quite some time. The film currently has a 75% critical score and an even better Verified Hot 92% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s the best Rotten Tomatoes score for a Sydney Sweeney-led film since 2023’s Reality, which currently has a 94% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Housemaid is currently showing in theaters.
