The Sword Art Online anime franchise continues to create new content, as the official X account has announced a new film in production. The announcement is also related to a report from two years ago, as during an event called Full Dive, a new anime movie was announced, but didn’t receive any more news until now.
According to ComicBook.com, the announcement was revealed after their most recent film, Sword Art Online: Progressive Movie – Kuraki Yuuyami no Scherzo, debuted on Japanese television. The SAO team then sent the announcement tweet as a thank you to those who watched the broadcast.
This newly announced production will be the third movie in the SAO series. The other two are Sword Art Online Movie: Ordinal Scale, released in 2017, and Kuraki Yuuyami no Scherzo, released in 2022.
It is recommended that those who want to dive into the story of SAO watch the first season, which has the following synopsis on Crunchyroll, an anime streaming service:
“In the near future, a Virtual Reality Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (VRMMORPG) called Sword Art Online has been released where players control their avatars with their bodies using a piece of technology called Nerve Gear. One day, players discover they cannot log out, as the game creator is holding them captive unless they reach the 100th floor of the game’s tower and defeat the final boss. However, if they die in the game, they die in real life. Their struggle for survival starts now…”
The SAO anime franchise first aired back in 2012. Its creator, Reki Kawahara, first created the light novel of the series in 2009. There are also spin-offs of the series in both anime and light novels titled Sword Art Online: Alternative, where stories focus on different stories and characters than those in the main series.
Sword Art Online, both the series and subsequent movies, as well as Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online, are all available on Crunchyroll.
Plot synopsis and cast and crew information on past seasons and movies in the series are available at MyAnimeList.net.
