While there’s a ton of vagueness set in motion currently, an upcoming project teaming Swiss Army Man directors s Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan (“The Daniels”) and Marvel mavens Anthony Russo and Joe Russo may prove enticing as more details set in. Deadline reports “The Daniels” are developing their follow-up to Swiss Army Man – a currently untitled science fiction film, slated to be as original as their debut feature – and have courted the Russos to produce.
The project, details of which are still under lock and key, will be written, produced and directed by Scheinert and Kwan and the Russo’s newly installed production company – itself untitled and set up with the Huayi Brothers Media Corporation – overseeing. It makes a certain narrative sense that the Russos would find a certain kinship with “The Daniels” and they themselves started their careers making eccentric and offbeat original projects (like 2002’s Welcome to Collinwood) before joining the Marvel flock.
You can’t get more offbeat than Swiss Army Man, which starred Paul Dano as a tragic young man deserted on a tropical island who befriends a gaseous corpse (played by Daniel Radcliffe); the duo (farts and all) being a strange journey home. The film, while polarizing, was a hit at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival where “The Daniels” picked up the U.S. Dramatic prize for Best Director. The film was later picked up by A24 Films and earned a respectable $4.2 million at the box office and earned two Independent Spirit Award nominations, including a Best First Feature mention.
The Russos, of course, are still in Marvel duty. They last directed the blockbuster Captain America: Civil War and are currently on hand for Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4.
