Legendary’s Gundam has finally found its director in Jim Mickle. This project has been in development for 6 years and just recently got updates. Jim Mickle, known for Netflix’s Sweet Tooth, is set to direct, write, and produce the live-action feature.
This Gundam adaptation is an American live-action film based on the popular anime franchise. It was first announced in 2019 and is just now receiving updates. It was first announced that comics writer Brian K. Vaughn would be writing the script with Jordan Voght-Roberts directing. However, Deadline reported that Voght-Roberts and Netflix are no longer part of the project.
Gundam was created by Yoshiyuki Tomino and first began in 1979 with the anime Mobile Suit Gundam. The story takes place in Earth’s future and follows a war between the Earth Federation and the space colonies of the Principality of Zeon. The weapons used during their battle are Gundams, gigantic humanoid mechanoids. The anime centers on the young Earth Federation Gundam pilot Amuro Ray and his rival CharAzanable. When it first premiered, the series did poorly and was canceled but was revived through the sales of Gundam model kits. Gundam became a staple in Japanese pop culture and created the mecha anime genre.
Gundam will be Mickle’s next big project. He is co-producing the film with his partner Linda Moran from their company Nightshade. His latest work includes the 2019 science fiction thriller In the Shadow of the Moon. Mickle’s upcoming projects are Donny Cates and Geoff Shaw’s comic book series God Country.
No release date for Gundam has been announced.
