Universal has released the full trailer for their remake of 1984’s Firestarter. This iteration will star Zac Efron as the father of a young girl named Charlie (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), who has the power to set fire using only her mind. When a shady government agency finds out about her powers, it is up to the father and daughter to do whatever it takes to survive and escape.
The original 1984 film starred a young Drew Barrymore as Charlie in one of her first famous roles. Armstrong takes on the mantle in this remake, and based on the trailer, does an excellent job of conveying the fear and dark interest in her powers.
The film is based on Stephen King’s 1980 bestseller of the same name. This time around, the script was written by Scott Teems, who previously wrote the script for Universal’s Halloween Kills last year. Keith Thomas is directing, with this being his second feature-length film behind 2019’s The Vigil.
Universal is again making the same decision with Firestarter’s release as they did with last year’s Halloween Kills. Firestarter will be in theaters and available to stream via Peacock on May 13th. The wait will more than likely be worth it based on the trailer.
