As the release of Superman draws closer, more details about the production are steadily being revealed. Among these are what was initially trimmed down after test screenings commenced, and even rumors circulating about the running time.
While confirmed by Gunn to be near completion, Superman still had a long road to get there after multiple test screenings, which resulted in over 20 minutes being cut. The last test screening before the film comes out is slated to take place later this week.
World of Reel reports that earlier test screenings got a lukewarm reception. The specifics of what didn’t work for viewers were the amount of humor, something that Gunn isn’t much of a stranger to after Guardians Of The Galaxy and The Suicide Squad. But given the reception, the humor was trimmed down substantially, resulting in a moderately slimmer runtime.
Similarly, the runtime became a topic of debate recently, after a rumor began to spread that Superman would clock in at a mere 2 hours and 2 minutes. MovieWeb reports that this runtime would have made it one of the shortest films to feature Superman, rivaled only by Superman IV: The Quest For Peace. However, Gunn himself debunked this rumor.
Once word made its way around to him on Threads, he outright said it was untrue that Superman has a 122-minute length. He went on to confirm the current status of the film, stating there’s still some effects left to be completed, while adding simply “that’s not the running time.”
Superman flies into theaters July 11th.
