On Tuesday, Jan. 28th, Sundance revealed all the trophy winners for the Short Film Categories shown at the Sundance Film Festival, presented at The Park in Park City, Utah. The Grand Jury Prize was given to The Flowers Stand Silently, Witnessing, a short-form documentary that follows a Scotland-based documentary filmmaker of Palestinian descent who goes on a journey searching for lost archival footage of Palestinian wildflowers. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Sundance Jury called the film “a timely, urgent, and beautiful examination of colonialism and a moving reclaiming of history through the use of archival footage.”
Other winners include Trokas Duras, which received the Jury Award in U.S. Fiction, and Grandma Nai Who Played Favorites, which received the Jury Award in International Fiction. We Were the Scenery received the Jury Award in Nonfiction, and Como si la Tierra se las hubiera tragado received the Jury Award in Animation. Two Special Jury Awards were also given out: One to May Kindred-Boothby for The Eating of an Orange, who received a special award for Animation Directing, and one to Loren Waters for Tiger, who received a special award for Nonfiction Directing.
In a statement provided by The Hollywood Reporter, Sundance Senior Programmer for Short Films Mike Plance praised many of the short films, saying, “Filmmakers bring us their distinctive visions from around the world, whether for entertainment or enlightenment and often both.” He continued, “We aim to bring new audiences to their work, especially as most of the filmmakers are attending Sundance for the first time. Congratulations to the award winners, whose films demonstrate the powerful artistic talent at the festival.”
Descriptions and information on the Short Film Winners can be found on Sundance’s website. From January 30th to February 2nd, Sundance will also allow viewers to stream most of its short film winners from home.
