Before the festival has even begun, titles are beginning to sell in early bids at Sundance. One of these films is the latest from Aint Them Bodies Saints director David Lowery, which reunites his previous stars Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara, in project titled A Ghost Story. A24 has picked up distribution rights to the film, according to Variety, without an initial viewing.
The studio has been known to step out ahead of the game ever since its founding in 2012. A24 is the same studio that picked up rights to 2015’s Room, which earned its lead actress Brie Larson an Academy Award, as well as this year’s Moonlight, which has picked up the most accolades out of any film so far this awards season and is a top contender for the Best Picture Oscar.
Fresh off of his breathtaking work on this year’s Pete’s Dragon, Lowery filmed A Ghost Story in secret over the summer with Affleck and Mara. Both actors were equally busy this year, with Affleck turning in a Best Actor-caliber performance in Manchester by the Sea and Mara appearing in the awards contender Lion alongside Dev Patel. For A Ghost Story, the actors will once again play a couple being torn apart, but this time with a twist. Affleck will portray a ghost haunting the house of Mara’s character.
This is the third film to sell early before the festival’s opening night. Luca Guadagnino’s (A Bigger Splash) gay romance Call Me By Your Name sold to Sony Picture Classics and Netflix picked up Casting JonBonet, a documentary about the 6-year-old beauty pageant contestant’s 1996 murder.
A Ghost Story will premiere at the festival’s “Next” section in just about two week’s time.
