Focus Features has announced a fall release date for the upcoming historical drama Suffragette staring Meryl Streep (Into the Woods), Carey Mulligan (Drive), and Helena Bonham Carter (The King’s Speech). The movie that follows the campaign to give women the right to vote, will release in limited theaters October 23. Suffragette was acquired by Focus Features earlier this month.
Mulligan plays a woman name Maud, a working wife and mother who decides to fight for her dignity at work and joins several women activists fighting for the right to vote. The movie is the second feature from director Sarah Gavron, who earned a BAFTA nomination for Most Promising Newcomer and a British Independent Film Award nomination for Best Director for her first feature, Brick Lane. With its impressive ensemble and subject matter, Suffragette is expected to earn a lot of awards buzz come fall.
In the meantime, Mulligan is starring in the adaptation of the romance drama Far From the Madding Crowd, set to release May 1, and Streep can next be seen in the the musical Ricki and the Flash, set for August 6.
