Steven Spielberg’s ‘The Fabelmans’ Opened Successfully During ‘Wakanda Forever’ Week (Specialty Box Office)

This weekend the latest Steven Spielberg’s feature entitled The Fabelmans opened in selected theaters. The release happened during the same weekend of Marvel’s expected Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Spielberg’s film had high attendance, grossing $160k only across four cinemas in NY and LA. The film will expand to more cinemas on the upcoming weeks.

The Fabelmans opening has been very similar to other recent specialty openings like Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin and Todd Field’s TÁR. The performance this weekend was strong and promises a high audience when expanding. The feature has received good comments from the critics.Being directed by the legendary Spielberg it is likely to attract a more broad audience in relation to other specialty films. Universal Pictures distributes the feature.

The Fabelmans is a semi-autobiographic coming-of-age story tha follows Sammy Fabelman, a young aspiring filmmaker who understands the world and his own family through cinema. The theme the film explores resembles recent James Gray’s Armageddon Time.The cast includes Gabriel LaBelle, Paul Dano, Michele Williams, Judd Hirsch and Seth Rogen.Jim Orr from Universal Pictures referred to the opening weekend:

“Steven Spielberg has crafted one of his most personal stories yet, an incredible universal coming of age story that clearly resonated with audiences this weekend…We have no doubt the film will captivate audiences throughout the holiday season”.

Among specialty films playing now The banshees of Inisherin continues attracting audience collecting an estimated total of $5.8 million so far. TÁR has grossed a total of $4.5 million and the Swedish film Triangle of Sadness a total of $3.5 million. Chinonye Chukwu’s Till was the 9th more seen during the weekend and so far has collected over $8 million.

Other similar films that continue at the cinemas are Decision to Leave by Korean director Park Chan-Wook, Charlotte Wells’ Aftersun and Dina Amer’s You Resemble Me.

The Fabelmans will expand to 600 cinemas by November 23.
