Steve McQueen, director of the Oscar winning Best Picture, 12 Years Slave, is set to re-team with producers New Regency Pictures on a big-screen update of the 1980’s UK miniseries Widows, according to The Hollywood Reporter.The miniseries, written by Lynda La Plante (Prime Suspect), centers on a group of wives widowed when a heist involving their husbands goes horribly wrong. The women decide to take matters into their own hands and complete the ill-fated job. The feature adaptation is said to be a passion project for McQueen, with the miniseries having aired in his native London when he was just a teenager. McQueen will write and direct, as well as produce alongside Iain Canning and Emile Sherman (The King’s Speech).
McQueen’s most recent focus has been on the pilot for the HBO drama Codes of Conduct starring newcomer Devon Terrell in the lead. The show centers on a young black man’s experience entering the high society of New York. Canning and Sherman join McQueen as executive producers on the project.
New Regency has been seeing some success as of late, with Gone Girl and Birdman getting awards buzz. In addition to the Widows project, the studio recently announced their acquisition of the graphic novel Wytches, with Brad Pitt’s (Fury) Plan B set to produce.
