Horror fans rejoice! The classic 1984 horror story by Stephen King Pet Sematary gets a green light for a remake with Jaun Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later, Intruders) set to direct. The novel was originally nominated for a World Fantasy Novel Award.
Pet Sematary, tells the frightening story of a young family that moves to a new home in Maine, where the father has gotten a job teaching at the local university. They are befriended by a neighbor who informs them that their home borders on a mystical graveyard, used mostly by kids for their dead pets, but that anything buried there comes back to life – with horrifying consequences. They are also warned to stay clear of the highway that carries fast moving trucks and is has a reputation for fatal accidents.
The original 1989 Pet Sematary was made for a mere $11 million, with a return of $57 million. The enthusiasm spawned a 1992 Pet Sematary 2, starring Edward Furlong and Anthony Edwards that saw moderate profits.
With the horror genre enjoying a surge in popularity, Paramount and producer Lorenzo Bonaventura (Transformers, GI Joe: Retaliation) feel confident. The script is by Matt Greenberg (1408, Reign of Fire) and David Kajganich (The Invasion, Blood Creek).
