People seem to forget how huge a fan base Star Wars really is. With the industry getting taken over by popular franchises like DC and Marvel, Star Wars has fallen into the background over the last couple of years. But this month, while celebrating the 20th anniversary of the premiere of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith with a re-release in theaters, it seemingly gained that traction back.
It was guessed that the re-release of the feature wouldn’t have much of a performance at the box office, but people underestimated the fans. Like Jedis, they seemed to summon the force because just in its Thursday previews, the George Lucas-directed feature has grossed an estimated $3.4 million in tickets, surpassing fresh releases like Until Dawn and The Accountant 2. All this shouldn’t be as surprising as it is because in 2005, when Revenge of the Sith was first released, it made around $850 million at the global box office, labeling it as the second highest-grossing feature film of 2005.
Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith is led by Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker, along with performances from Black Swan’s Natalie Portman as Padmé, Fargo’s Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi, and The Avengers’ Samuel L. Jackson as Mace Windu. The feature focuses on Anakin’s dark descent into Darth Vader as he is taken advantage of by Palpatine. It was the conclusion to the second trilogy in what is called the “Skywalker Saga,” and the franchise only came back to theaters in 2015 with Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the two consecutive features that followed in 2017 and 2019.
Nevertheless, this re-release being this close to Star Wars Day on May 4th, we could see another boost in ticket sales this coming weekend as well.
