As he completes his upcoming film Da 5 Bloods, Spike Lee now has another project brewing. The now Oscar-winning director has been contracted to direct a film adaptation of David Byrne’s heralded Broadway show American Utopia, according to Deadline.
Production of American Utopia will be handled by RadicalMedia, Byrne’s Todomundo, and of course Lee’s Forty Acres and a Mule Filmworks production banners. Lee, Byrne, Jeff Skoll, David Linde and Diane Weyermann will all hold executive producer roles while Warner Music Group’s David Bither, Charlie Cohen, and Kurt Deutsch will also serve as producers. Bill Pohlad, Jon Kamen, Dave Sirulnick, Meredith Bennett, Kristin Caskey, Mike Isaacson and Patrick Catullo, who were chiefly responsible for putting together the Broadway show together will be joining the production team.
American Utopia premiered on Broadway around October 2019 and is currently running through February 16 at the Hudson Theatre, where it has continuously sold-out night after night at its box office. The film will be eyed for a 2020 release date.
Lee upcoming war epic Da 5 Bloods is currently in post-production and will star Chadwick Boseman and Paul Walter Hauser. Last year, Lee racked up six Academy Award nominations for his film Blackkklansman starring John David Washington and Adam Driver, winning one for Best Adapted Screenplay.
