As AI continues to be a hot discussion topic in the entertainment industry, another production team has confirmed that it will not have a place in their current projects. Film producer Christopher Miller, one of the writers and producers of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, the third animated film in the Spider-Verse franchise, has recently announced that the newest film in the franchise will not have AI in it.
According to ComicBook.com, Miller spoke on the subject when a fan tweeted to Sony Animation, who created the Spider-Verse trilogy, on X asking them not to add AI into any aspect of the film. Miller would say that they don’t plan on doing anything like that.
“One of the main goals of the films is to create new visual styles that have never been seen in a studio CG film, not steal the generic plagiarized average of other artists’ work,” Miller responded in the tweet.
This is in line with Miller’s previous statements on AI. In an interview with Forbes, Miller says that AI doesn’t have the power to innovate any medium in the entertainment industry such as animation.
“It’s going to just do an imitation of the things that came before it. It’s our job as humans to keep making things new,” Miller said in the interview.
However, some tough situations will be heading Sony’s way regarding their vision of AI. Tony Vinciquerra, CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, has said in conferences that Sony plans to focus on implementing AI into creating their films and television programs, reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
But, because of the strikes between writers and actors last year, one of the topics being AI in the contract between Hollywood and writers, it will affect how companies like Sony implement it into their creative processes. Although it will be a while until we see how Sony will use AI for its future franchise, its current teams, such as the Academy Award-winning Spider-Verse franchise, will continue working without it.
