After the massive critical and commercial success that was last year’s Spiderman: Into The Spider-Verse, Academy Award winning producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller have announced their next venture. As announced by Deadline, the duo will develop a project from the mind of Andy Weir, author of The Martian book which was adapted into the 2015 film of the same name starring Matt Damon.
Not much is known about the idea behind this new project, other than that Universal has acquired it and a screenwriter will be hired soon. Aditya Sood is set to produce, who worked previously on The Martian with Weir.
Lord and Miller have worked together as a filmmaking team since meeting as students at Dartmouth College. The pair earned a development deal from Disney during their school years after then-chairman Michael Eisner came across a school paper profile written on Miller. Since then, they have gone on to direct the highly acclaimed animated films Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs and The Lego Movie, as well as 21 Jump Street and its sequel 22 Jump Street.
The duo have also found success as producers, working on Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2, The Lego Batman Movie, The Lego Ninjago Movie, and last year’s Smallfoot, in addition to Spider-Verse. The pair also served as the original directors of Solo: A Star Wars Story before being replaced by Ron Howard over creative differences with Disney. They eventually received executive producing credits on the film.
The plot of this new film has yet to be announced, but will reportedly focus on “another problem-solving science fiction adventure.” No release date has been reported.
