One of the most anticipated aspects of Captain America: Civil War is the introduction of the newly-rebooted Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland. We got a quick peak at him in the last full trailer for the film, but still don’t know the exact role that the character is going to play. And even if Holland has a small part in Civil War, he’s getting his first standalone film next summer. It remains untitled, although there have been rumors of what it may eventually be called. While that mystery may stay just that for the time being, Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige did give a juicy tease as to what fans can expect.
Speaking to EW, Feige discussed the many possibilities that the Spider-Man reboot has open to it, considering the, what was once unsure but now are more probable, futures of bigger Marvel players like Robert Downey, Jr. (Iron Man) and Chris Evans (Captain America). Feige noted his excitement in finally getting able to add the web-slinging hero into the MCU and the various new connections that it creates.
He is in the universe now, and the fun of the universe is that characters go back and forth.
Even though Feige wouldn’t say who will appear in the standalone, there are plenty of new heroes who could join Holland in the independent storylines. The co-director of Civil War, Joe Russo, who was also a part of the questioning, jumped in and said “Let’s just say … Great Lakes Avengers.” Now, that may not ring a bell with most, and it was probably a joke. If not, the characters that we could see being featured include the peculiar group which includes Mister Immortal, the pterodactyl woman Dinah Soar, the teleporter Doorman, Big Bertha, and Flatman.
It’s an enticing thought that we could be getting a look at a brand new set of characters, but at the least we may be seeing some familiar faces that have not been previously featured in previous Spider-Man films.
Spider-Man hits theaters on July 7, 2017.
