The numbers are officially in: Spider-Man: No Way Home has dominated these past nine weekends and will be known as the third highest-grossing film of all time at the domestic box office. The Jon Watts directed and Tom Holland and Zendaya starring movie grossed $1.6M this Valentine’s weekend in 3,300 theaters, making its gross as of now $760.9M. No Way Home eclipses James Cameron’s Avatar’s $760.5M earnings. Sony has yet to make the record official.
Avatar previously held the spot, which made $749.7M in nine months, plus an additional 2010 re-release ($10.7M) to get the movie at $760.5M. This feat was completed in just 60 days of release. The Sony/Marvel blockbuster also held the #1 spot in six of those nine weeks, the second most #1 weekends amounted. That record is still held by Avatar, which held the #1 spot for nine weekends straight.
Spider-Man: No Way Home remains the 6th highest-grossing title worldwide with a running total of $1.8 billion. The film ranked fourth on Monday after Universal’s Marry Me ($3.04M), 20th Century Studios/Disney’s Death on the Nile ($2.6M), and Paramount’s Jackass Forever (est. $1.7M). Sony is also hoping to keep its box office momentum with another Tom Holland-led title, Uncharted, which experts estimate will earn approximately $30-35M on its opening weekend. Avatar continues to remain the highest-grossing movie of all time at the global box office with $2.84 billion. The franchise will get a second shot at retaining its record, with Avatar 2 finally hitting theaters on December 16 after six years-plus of production.
